Bridging in Minecraft: The Essential Guide

Over time Minecraft has developed an extensive range of bridging techniques, all named and having various difficulty levels. Our plan is to show you all the essential Bridging methods available as of version 1.19

Bridging in Minecraft is something that EVERY play will have to do at some stage. More so for mini-games such as Skywars and Bedwars. This will be where you need to hone your bridging skills. As racing foward onto another floating island, where extra loot is stashed, will mean the difference between winning and loosing.

If you feel there is a technique worth covering then LET US KNOW!

What is Bridging?

Bridging involves using blocks to build a platform so that you can travel accross a gap. Bridging or Speed Bridging has no need for a fancy look and is done purely to get you as quickly as possible to the other side.

Straight Sneaking

Difficulity
Very Easy
Speed
1.6bps
Sneaking in Minecraft stops or prevents players from walking over the edge. Especially useful when you are on a floating island and that extra step will get you terminated from the game. (By the way, sneaking prior to Version 1.3.1 of Minecraft would let you fall over the edge).

Straight Sneaking is a combination of sneaking whilst placing blocks in a straight line whilst looking backwards.

How to do Straight Sneaking

Start by facing your back toward the edge/direction in which you want to build.
Crouch down by using the shift key and keep holding it down.
Move backwads over the block until you cannot move any more.
Look down and position the little + onto the side of the block (close to the middle) and place a new block.
With your first block placed you can now safley keep moving backwards in the crouch position and placing blocks. The end result will have you moving backwards, placing blocks as you go, all from the crouch position. This is by far the easiest, fail safe method as you have no way to fall off into the void.

Diagonal Sneaking

Moving Sideways (strafing) using this method is in fact faster than moving straight backwards so be sure to give it a try as well.

Follow Straight Bridging but at a 45° by using (S)+(D).

Cross Bridging

Difficulity
Very Easy
Speed
1.7bps
Cross Bridging is exactly the same as straight sneaking but your view is from the side of the the block.

It offers a slight speed advantage as it allows for two faces of the last block to show. From here you can place two blocks quickly and alter your build direction if needed.

How to do Diagonal Sneaking

Start by facing your back toward the edge/direction in which you want to build.
Crouch down by using the shift key and keep holding it down.
Move backwads over the block until you cannot move any more.
Position the little + onto the side of the block and place your first block.
Rather than travelling straight back you use S+A or S+D key after your first block so you are at an angle. The idea is to aim half way down the block and you can place two blocks quickly.
Position the little + onto the side of the block and place a new block.

Repeat the previous step and keep going as far as you need.

Ninja Bridging

Difficulity
Easy
Speed
2.3bps
Also called Speed or Fast Bridging. You start out like the traditional straight bridging but in between blocks you walk rather than crouch your way across.

This makes it look like you are jumping up and down as you traverse across your bridge being built. This can also be done as a diagonal ninja sneak.

How to do Ninja Bridging

Have your position ready to go like you do for Diagonal Sneaking with your back to the edge.
Position the little + onto the side of the block and place your first block. Start strafing.
Let go of your sneak key very briefly whilst strafing. Then press the sneak key quickly again.
You  need to continue this sneaking, standing position while still strafing. That brief little standing time will be all the difference to your speed in placing your next block.

Schneller Bridging

Difficulity
Medium
Speed
4.1bps
Schneller Bridging is a very slight variation on the Ninja Bridging technique. The only difference is the shift time is so minimal that rather than crouch to the edge you are really close to the edge and bob rathery than crouch. Timing is critical!

How to do Schneller Bridging

Have your position ready to go like you do for Diagonal Sneaking with your back to the edge.
Position the little + onto the side of the block and place your first block. Start strafing.
You tap your sneak key very briefly just when you are REALLY close to the edge of the block. This will minimise your crouch time.
You  need to continue this very short sneaking, longer standing position while still strafing. The longer standing time willl speed up the pace compared to Ninja Bridging.

Speed Bridging

Difficulity
Easy
Speed
Fast
The Bedrock Edition offers an advantage with having your build auto-repeat if you keep your build pressed down. Using this feature will let you build quickly when you move forward using (w). You can just keep walking without stopping or worry about any timing.

How to do Speed Bridging

Get your starting position so you are facing in the direction you want to build, about 3-4 blocks back from the edge.

1. Position your + on the edge. Place your first block down. Move forward but do not release the build button or stop moving forward.

2. Your player will automatically climb up the one block you have placed and continue to place blocks in front of you.

3. As long as you do not stop moving or let go of the build button the bridge will continue as fast as you can walk.

You can even do a jump and the auto build will still work as long as you keep yourself going in the right direction.

One Stack

Difficulity
Medium
Speed
Average
One stack bridging (also known as Staircase or Shift Bridging) is the building in a straight line but going up in height at the same time. Think of this as Ninja Bridging but building upwards as well. The end result looks similar to a staircase. This is used to gain a height advantage over your oponent and also prevents them from accessing your bridge back to your base.

How to do One Stack Bridging

Get into the same starting position as you do for the Straight Sneaking
Jump straight up and place a block under your feet.
Just after you have placed your block use the sneak (S)+(D) key to expose the edge again.
Place another block on the side and release sneak.
Repeat the steps again.

Jump straight, place a block under your feet, sneak to expose the edge, place another block on the side.
Continue the process until you have reached the height you need.

Two Stack

Difficulity
Medium
Speed
Average
Two stack bridging is a variation on one stack bridging where you extend your build horizontally by one extra block. This creates a longer bridge quicker with less overall height.

How to do Two Stack Bridging

Get into the same starting position as you do for the Straight Sneaking
Jump straight up and place a block under your feet.
Just after you have placed your block use the s + sneak key to move backwards and expose the edge again.
Place another block on the side and release sneak so you keep moving backwards.
Keep strafing and use the sneak button when you get close to the edge. Place your second block just after the first. It is a very short release. You will be left with 3 blocks in a straight row.
Release all keys and jump straight up again. Place another block under your feet. Repeat the previous two steps and keep moving across/repeating as you go.

Diagonal One Stack

Difficulity
Medium
Speed
Average
This is basically a cross between One Stacking and Diagonal Sneaking.

It creates a diagonal upwards path where you move a little quicker due to walking in-between placing your next block and back to crouching again.

How to do Diagonal One Stack Bridging

Get into the same starting position as you do for the Straight Sneaking
Jump straight up and place a block under your feet.
Rather than travelling straight back use your S+A or S+D key after your first block so you are at an angle. Walking places you closer to the edge faster.
You need to try to crouch before you get to the edge just like in the Ninja Bridging
Once you get to the edge aim half way down the block and you can place two blocks quickly.
Repeat the last three steps over and over until you have a diagonal staircase as high as you need it.

Breezily Bridging

Difficulity
Hard
Speed
Average
Breezily Bridging (or Strafe Building) is walking backwards in a zig-zag pattern whilst building a straight bridge. The zig-zag/strafing increases your walking distance enough to place blocks steadly behind you as you go.

How to do Breezily Bridging

Place yourseft square on the block. You will be backwards trying to start from the middle of your block, towards the right.
Strafe using A+S across the block and as you approach the edge place your block.

(If you started on the left hand side you would strafe using S+D instead)
Swap to using (A+S) and continue walking backwards accross the block. You want to try to zig-zag accross the middle of each block and get close to the side of each block (without falling off).

Witchly Bridging

Difficulity
Medium
Speed
Average
Witchly Bridging is very similay to Breezily in that your movement is still moving backward and sideways but just the same sideways direction. So you would alternate between  (A) and (S)  OR (D) and (S).

Bridging speed can be a little better controlled as you have the ability to walk futher or slightly less. That is, you will have a large zig-zag motion or just a small zig-zag motion.

How to do Witchly Bridging

Place yourself backwards at a 45° from the middle of your block towards one side.

(Choose the left or right side based on how you build.)
Walk backwards then sideways using (S then A) or (S then D) to move accoss your bridge. Building straight blocks one after the other as you cross an edge.
You do small wiggles accross the building edge using just (A then S) OR (S then D).

There is no need to get close to the outer edges.

Jitter Bridging

Difficulity
Hard
Speed
Average
When it comes to randomly placing blocks in no real defined pattern, except somewhat backwards, then Jitter Bridging cuts the cake. Requiring 10+ clicks per second to achieve in order not to meet the big V (void).

Your building tends to traverse up more than across and is achieved by jitter clicking, butterfly clicking or drag clicking. Harder due to the constant clicking needed as well as backward trajectory.

How to do Jitter Bridging

Place yourself backwards from the middle of your block.

Crouch so you can see where you need to position your starting edge.
You are going to jump up and start placing blocks under yourself.

Keep holding (S)+Jumping and tapping (A) or (D) to keep yourself positioned placing blocks.
Try to maintain 10+ CPS to keep building blocks under and around you whilst moving backwards.

There should be more blocks built to the right to really be a Jitter Bridge (But it's hard!)

Moonwalking

Difficulity
Medium
Speed
4.3bps
The bridging is simple in it that it is moving backwards at a slight angle and placing blocks on the inclined edge. Because it is simple in movement it is down to the timing, which we feel makes it a medium difficulty.

Using single clicking or double clicking is possible with Moonwalking but you may need to try drag clicking to avoid the void.

How to do Moonwalking

Place yourself backwards and at a slight angle (about 20°). Have your build positioned to the top of the block.
Moving backwards without stopping continue to place your blocks on the topmost edge.
You will start to wander sideways across the blocks the further you build back. As you travel backwards adjust your position by tapping (A).

Eagle Bridging

Difficulity
Hard
Speed
4.6bps
Eagle Bridging is a variation on God Bridging with a crouch/shift down every 3 blocks to reposition you.

How to do God Bridging

Just as you do with God Bridging place yourself at a 45° angle on your starting block. Have your build aimed at the topmost part of the edge.
The speed in God Bridging is gained from the combination of pressing (S)+(D). You travel faster than if you were to press just (D) or (S).
You are going to be strafing backwards using just (S)+(D) and placing your block on the topmost edge as in Moonwalking.
Again timing is super important to be able to get your blocks placed right on the edge. Much like Moonwalking if your 45° angle is off you will walk over the side of your block.

Believe it or not your can acheive god bridging at a 4cps rate but having that sort of timimg over a longer distance is going to be intense! So learn jitter or drag clicking of your mouse.

If you prefer so strafe facing the other direction then swap your (D) key with (A) in these steps.
Every 7-8 blocks you will need to jump and place one block up or you will fall of the edge. This resets your position and you can start strafing again.

God Bridging

Difficulity
Hard
Speed
4.6bps
Meet the almighty God Bridging. It is basically being at as close to 45° as you can and strafing. CPS must be performed at a rate of 17+.

Crazy mouse flapping moves and screen shakin like it's gonna fall off your desk!. So get good at jitter, butterfly or drag clicking otherwise don't even bother!

How to do God Bridging

Place yourself at a 45° angle on your starting block.
